Tharad Fm
Type Locality and Naming
SUBSURFACE: Well Tharad-1, (depth interval 961-1546m). It is of 585 m thickness. [Original Publication: Chandra, P.K. and Chowdhary, L.R. (1969) Stratigraphy of the Cambay Basin, ONGC Bulletin, Vol 6 (2), pp: 202-203.] Reference well: Sanchaor – 1 (depth interval 1540 – 2187 m), its thickness is of 647 m.
Synonyms: Sugary sandstone and cyclic sediments succeeding the Cambay Fm / Olpad Fm is Tharad Formation.
Lithology and Thickness
Sandy claystone and coal. The type section comprises of sandstone, shale and thick coal beds. Sandstone is grey, pink, coarse to medium grained. The formation in Sanchaor-1 is comprises of sand, shale and coal alternation.

Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
Unconformable with Olpad Fm
Upper contact
Conforamble with Tarapur Fm.
Regional extent
The formation extends from Sanchor in the north to Patan depression upto Khari river in the south and west of Mehsana Horst in Khambel-Becharaji area.

Fossils
The formation is poorly fossiliferous, at places solitary forms of bryozoa and shell fragments along with sideritic globular bodies have been recorded (Sharma et al., 1990, unpublished report on well Tharad-P).
